What type of material is your ball made of? I use a mild dish detergent and lukewarm water and have had no problems.
After cleaning if the gazing ball still isn't shiny looking you could always give it a coat or two of spray paint. That way you could change colors to whatever you want.
Mild soap, cool water, microfiber cloths to clean and dry and you should have it looking as good as new. Rinse well, so you don't leave a film. This has worked well for glass and stainless steel.
