You can remove them and spray paint them but it does scratch off a bit so you will have to redo it at some point.
You may want to refinish rather than paint. But if you are set on painting, clean with denatured alcohol and then paint with a spray that is designed for this type metal. I would suggest checking out RustOleum brand since it was designed originally for painting metals.

How To Update Door Hardware with Paint. Don't spend money on new hardware for your door just yet. Remove doorknob and lock mechanism from the door. Clean the hardware with steel wool, then sand. Insert a small piece of folded painter's tape into the keyhole so paint doesn't get in the lock mechanism.Hi Ellen. I'm Cindy. If possible, remove the handles. Lightly sand and wipe off any dust. You could use a cardboard box as a paint booth. Then spray light coats with a spray paint made for this exact purpose. Make sure you allow to dry in between each coat of paint. Then replace them on doors.
Clean them real good. Lightly rub with a green kitchen scrubby to dull the shine. Rustoleum 2X spray paint for metal.
