Place some lemon peel down there on occasion. It will help with the smell. You could also try pouring a little baking soda down there with some water and let it sit and then rinse with hot water.
Most experts recommend cleaning it by grinding up ice cubes. Citrus peel is pretty rough on garbage disposals.
Once in a while (maybe once a month or so) pour a bit of baking soda down it followed by a good bit of vinegar. This should help remove anything that doesn't come off with the ice cubes and should deodorize it well. After about an hour, flush it with boiling (or at least very hot) water.
We used to put citris peels through ours for prevention of odors and mildew. You can also run a cleanser like Simple Green in it for the same reason. It disinfects and kills the mildew. Use the concentrate about 1/4 cup and let it set a while before running water and letting it grind it through. Do the citris peels like orange or lemons any time you have them in the home and at least once a week once you get the mildew cleaned out. Simple Green is also non-toxic!
