We just bought our first starter home! So excited to decorate, but I have always been horrible at furniture placement. Especially since our living room is sort of odd. We currently own a big comfy sectional that I really don’t want to get rid of and of course a tv will go in this room as well, please help give me some ideas!!

Hi Mindy congrats on the house! I personally do not love TVs over the fireplace, so I would put it on the wall on the left. I would do something like this project to make the fireplace into a statement - https://www.charlestoncrafted.com/2016/10/20/orc-week-3-use-moulding-extend-fireplace/

Thanks for the link that is something my husband is excited abt possibly building around our boring fireplace

  • Hi Mindy,

It looks like a great space to work with. It would be great to see some more pics and to get an idea of where the other rooms around this space are located. A fireplace is usually a focal point of a room so the furniture should be situated around the fireplace to display that. You could consider putting a TV above the fireplace or on the adjacent wall. Putting a TV on the adjacent wall will allow for an entertainment center under it making it easier to hide your electrical components. Then you could set up the sectional to face the TV but to also remain open to the fireplace - meaning don't put the back of the sectional in front of the fireplace. If there is no TV or you choose to put the TV above the fireplace you could put the sectional facing the fireplace with the back of it towards the wall and perhaps a sofa table behind it. With a sectional there are a couple ways to position the furniture you just don't want to block off the fireplace or make the room feel closed off with the back of the sectional facing a certain way. I recommend looking at pictures on Pinterest and doing Google searches to help with inspiration and ideas. Hope that helps. Can be difficult to describe with words sometimes.

The room is one I would like - big and roomy. There is an opportunity to use large prints on the walls that you can DIY. The colors can be changed to give you an accent wall. If the fireplace is your focal point - paint that but not too dark and lighter shades on the walls. The black in the fireplace could help with being one of the accent colors. There should be a chance to create seating areas with a couple of chairs and small tables. Have fun - enjoy it.

  • are the walls freshly painted? would be nice to use a nice color. This is SW Passive in the first photo) Also notice their furniture layout. (and painting all your wood trim white would really look great) .

Pic #2 would be perfect for your space. you have a large wall that could accommodate the same type of wall unit that is shown in that pic. put some chairs in front of each window, get a nice large ottoman, a rug and a few side tables. you have a large room so take advantage.

if you don't need the fan, replace with a nice chandelier that comes down a little more. or, look at last pic and see if doing an updated fan would look nicer.

see all the attached photos for ideas, decor items and placement around fireplace. It's hard to give you specifics since you don't have any furniture. decide where the tv is to go (wall mount on the wall?). maybe do a nice wood mantel and a great piece of art over the fireplace. Remove the wood sill from the window and replace with window casing in white around the entire window, then do an inside mount blind of some sort. roman blind, woven wood or cellular would look great.

In the 7th pic, you can see the sofa is facing the wall that would be where the tv is. look at how they decorated around the fireplace. (and, putting in a french door or two in place of those windows would look awesome)

I agree with some of the previous posts regarding the placement of the TV not over the fireplace

I love the fireplace remodel that was posted

I would place the sectional so that you can sit and see the fireplace and also see the TV similar to the picture below

Good luck with your project, would love to see what you do
