Hi Jan, Remove the top and hinges and use the base as the top!
Attach poles to the four corners from the floor to the correct height and top with a piece of glass or plexiglass so you have a flat surface.
That would be awesome!
Replace the top with inexpensive plywood and stain with several coats of varnish like polyacrylic or polyurethane. Or make a frame with 1x2 around pine 2x6's or whatever size you'd like either smaller or larger then paint or stain those as well. So many options, even a shadow box filled with items you love with a clear plastic see through top like polyacrylic I think it's called. Good luck
