Turn it off for a while. When our old one would quit, it usually meant it had frozen up. If that doesn't work, I would have someone with A/C knowledge check it out.
Just run the fan on it, that helps it get unfrozen faster.
I agree with the recommendation for regular maintenance and add that you may need to change your filter.
Former HVAC tech: Probably needs a puron recharge. This is not something you can do yourself.
In the mean time: with ANY air system: check your filters...change them at least 2x per year, and clean/remove dust every time you think about it. Particularly those with indoor pets. Nothing kills a system faster than starving for air.
Also, while you wait for your appointment, turn the AC off and run the fan only ( put the setting for the fan to the ON position. Chances are the evaporator coil is caked with ice.
I agree that it sounds like you've got a "freeze" so turn the a/c off. You could actually run the heat for a little bit to get it to thaw out. Agreed change the filter and be certain to use a great quality filter. I found out the hard way what a difference it makes to the life of your system.
I was also told to periodically pour some bleach down the drainage tube to kill any mold or bacteria growing in that dark, damp environment.
