There are a lot of great products out there for painting concrete porches and patios. Check Home Depot, they carry a variety of stains and solids and different looks you may be going for and will provide you with step by step instructions and products from start to finish. I personally would do a solid color as you can have fun with it making it to match your house or a focal point
Stain would be less likely to peel because it penetrates the concrete. However, if you ever want to change the color then paint would be your best go to.
A stain will enhance a concrete surface, but won't cover imperfections like paint will. However, a stain may be more durable if you've sealed it correctly. Whereas paint may chip and peel over time.
Whichever you choose remember to wash the concrete surface, and fill in cracks and holes before using a primer. After you're done seal the floor to increase its lifespan.
You can always do a combination of stain and paint. Stain the concrete and paint a stencil on top.
We did a staircase makeover with stencil detailing, but only used paint. You can see images of the project here.
Hope this helped
Dixie Belle to the rescue!!! Painting is super fun. We do have a water based stain that you could use as well. Its totally whatever look you are going for. Our stain tends to be more translucent. I am attaching some pix of paint that was done on concrete floors. These are not rugs but real paint that one of our retailers named Tina Carver used.
