I am sure that as a cat owner you're pretty well-acquainted with litter box maintenance, but here are a few tips just in case. I have found that the organic clumping like Cat's Best Oko Plus really absorbs and hides the smell. You can also try scented litter. These often have a very mild scent so won't have an overwhelming fragrance.
My husband waxes the litter box when he does a total empty. This keeps the clumping litter from sticking to the sides of the box...where I suspect some smell sticks too!

My favorite topic! I whole-heartedly recommend the Breeze Litter System. Amazon makes a generic version of the pee pads now, too!

Use an odor absorber in the room with the box. You can buy charcoal ones that are all natural.
