Michelle, I think a coordinated color scheme would really help. You could repeat a material in your kitchen, living room, and bedroom. Keep all the walls the same color. It could be lovely. Good luck.
if you are able to paint the walls, (I was a decorative artist for years and here is what I noticed). paint everything the same color. Pick a color already in the room and use two colors close together. The idea is to use two VERY SOFT sea sponges and sponge on some color (diluted with glaze available from paint store) in drifts on the wall, like marble, then immediately soften the pattern, blending it. it would be helpful if you could practice on cardboard etc. The end result is that the room APPEARS LARGER! Imagine you are used to looking at marble on a small scale. so when you "blow it up in scale with the wall: you feel smaller and room feels larger. wish I had a better photo. but I think you can see that the walls are not just flat paint. the corners can be a little tricky...just use a "chip brush" from the paint store to pounce into them gently. and be sure to tape the ceiling and baseboards NEATLY! Hope this helps .
I have a couple of suggestions: see if you can have your curtains go floor to ceiling(almost). That is supposed to give height to the room. I agree with staying with a coordinated color scheme. Get some pretty containers on sale---tell your loved ones you want gift cards to craft stores for gifts---and line everything up on the shelves. I have my stuff in wire containers with those buff mailing tags on them.
looking at your photos I think getting that big shelf down and removing the kitchen door would open that room up immediately. Follow up with a light color on the walls of both rooms ad a bright area rug and I think you will feel like someone turned a light on also what about painting your floors white it's not too difficult if you would like to. To make it cozy, I would say you need a large area rug and some furniture. If you don't have furniture, start going thrift store shopping, garage sales, craigslist, and Habitat for Humanity Restore. If funds are low, sign up on Freecycle.org in the city and state, and post requests for free furniture. I have gotten tons of stuff for my disabled clients on Freecyle and upgraded it with paint and a little elbow grease. Just need a pickup or station wagon, or a friend who has one to pick up the stuff.
Hi Michelle. I'm Cindy. To make a room look bigger, hang a large mirror across from a window. The reflection in the mirror makes a room appear bigger. To cozy your rooms up, use rugs and pillows. Since you have space for living/bedroom options a nice sleep sofa, daybed or create area wth bed and a folding screen. Nice rug in front of bed. Sofa go wth a loveseat , big furniture does not work in tiny spaces. Wth a small end table on each side. Kitchen not sure of size cute bistro set would be great if not if there is an empty wall put counter height butcher block up and 2 or 3 stools.

And remove the cornice board. You will get more light into the room.

Somali furniture and get furniture that has multi purposes so you don’t need that many pieces
Painting the entire area white and giving it a cottage feel is a great way to cozy it up.
