I have a hole in my wall over a fireplace in my living room. It is larger than my largest frame print. I don't want a tv in it. What do I do????
Dry wall tape and then sand it and spackle
This looks like a fairly big hole. Many of the home improvement stores have patches for this exact type of repair. The kit has a fibreglass mesh piece that can be cut if needed to cover the entire area. Then as noted above, use drywall mud and sand it. You'll need to give it a few coats so that the mesh doesn't show through. You can also get dustless mud now too. I haven't personally tried it yet, but from what I've read, it's a great product.
Cut out the damaged section so you have a regular sized hole. Cut a piece of drywall to match the hole. Set in place. . . tape and mud it and then paint the whole wall.
My husband was a house painter, and he had a solution for this kind of damage....cut out the bent and damaged drywall, and either replace it, and mud it in(lots of coats and sanding....or get a large sturdy piece of cardboard approximately the same size...poke a hole throught the middle and thread a piece of sturdy string through the hold leaving a couple of inches extra for the front.....stick the cardboard in behind the hole, glue the back and let it dry in place, then gently start to fill it in with drywall mud...will take a while to dry between coats, but in the end with sanding, it won't show any hole has ever been there.

Using an inexpensive 'plastic' roll-up cutting board (or even a large plastic lid upside down) as the backing piece to stick through the hold with a string/cord/tie in the middle, same method as above, works like a charm.
i would cut the drywall back to middle of studs on each side and screw a piece of drywall into studs. measure carefully Tape the edges and mud the tape sand repeat sanding and mud 2 more times. Paint
Thanks for all the great advice.
