Vinegar and salt or a lemon and salt rubbed on the copper should do the trick, Alma.
Depends on how big your pieces are on the small side, best way I have found is to immerse in boiling pure white vinegar. It normally takes only 30 seconds at the most. Then rinse with clear water.
If you have larger pieces, Wright’s makes an excellent copper cleaner that comes in paste form in a tub.
Lemon and salt is recommended.
I use vinegar (cheaper!) and salt.
Get your self a bottle of brass cleaner it’s great.
Brasso cleaner.
