You can use low baskets,that fit above your cabinets and put the ivy hanging out of them. Just know they are dust collectors!

If my mom has room over her kitchen cupboards she always puts artificial ivy, spider plants and other artificial plants up there. Her last place had a southwestern theme with a couple of southwestern pots with greens in them, numerous rustic styled baskets with greens in them and some southwestern style birds in various sizes. It really looked good and she liked it so much that she had it for fourteen years.
The look these days is more of a collection of objects arranged like a vignette. Baskets, milk glass, old fashioned crocs... You could definitely incorporate greenery, but I would do it more like a potted faux plant and not a garland.
