Buy a dremel tool and trim their nails with it. Sorry, but that’s been my experience.
I would keep the dogs nails trimmed short, you can even use one of those electrical files to keep them smooth. I used to do this on a clients pitbull who hated getting her nails trimmed but I got her used to it. Always have a jar of Quick Stop in case you nick a vein.
