You should be able to lower the float (ball) which is what controls the amount of water in the tank. There is a newer configuration of toilet tank plumbing that has more of a tubular looking thing, no ball. There’s an adjustment for water level on it.

Take the back off and adjust the chain that opens the flap to flush. It may be too short or too long, allowing too much water to flow into the bowl before it closes.

If your toilet is functioning properly and you just want to save some water, put a brick or two in the tank. It will fill to the same level, but use less water to get there.
I wouldn't play with plumbing .. make sure to talk to professional
