May 20, 2018 - Woodpecker Control Methods. Pest Control: If the insects are feeding on the wooden structure of the house, contact a pest control company for an insect inspection. Repair Holes: Use wood putty or replace shingles and planks where woodpeckers have already successfully drilled.
Drape some plastic snakes around the area.
Sandy hi, you have an insect problem otherwise they wouldn't be using your siding for an all you can eat bar. Do you live in an area that has termites or carpenter ants? If so contact a pest control service. They have a way to determine what is going on behind the boards. Good Luck!
I eventually resided my house with Hardieboard siding--looks like wood but is made from cement. No more woodpeckers--we had tried EVERYTHING!! Yes it was expensive but it has lasted for 9 years with no woodpecker holes and I expect it to last for at least 20 more years!!
Woodpeckers like termites. If your house is cleared for termites, then just go to Wal-Mart and get a plastic owl with a rotating head. Move it from place to place so they think it's real.
Woodpeckers go after insects; get an exterminator's inspection soon. You may need to remove some siding in-order to get a good look (do this where you see the birds the most). Check for leaks from gutters and leaders and roof sections that need repair because water will attract insects to wet wood. I had this problem with cedar shack siding... no insects were found... it only happened one year of the 12 years we were in that house. I suspect that there were a lot of birds that spring and food sources were scarce for birds. Other birds will nest in the holes the woodpeckers make so replace or repair the holes. Fake snakes and plastic owls do help to frighten birds away because they are natural predators that the birds do not want to deal with.
I had a woodpecker that pounded away at my chimney and gutters, both metal, no insects. Local cooperative said it's their territorial and mating noises. But I did put up strips of plastic (with tacks) temporarily, they blew in the wind and annoyed them. They went back to "knocking" on trees. But you should definitely check for insects first.
The yellow belly woodpeckers made so many rows of holes in my Apple trees. . . . .. . . . . up and down the trunk. I was told to wrap Burlap around the tree and loosely fasten it with grass hemp. Found at Wal-Mart in craft section in 12inch rolls. Also a nursery has a special stuff to spray on the trees. Perhaps this can be adapted to a house. You see, the holes in the trees released sap and attracted ants and more woodpeckers. Only happened to me Feb. 2018 and things seemed fine until tent- caterpillars consumed trees in my ct. neighborhood and my apples and leaves disappeared. Now I wait till 2019 spring to see if the trees completely died like the gypsy moth caterpillar in the past ..good luck. Maryann

Good luck to you on getting those birds under control!
I used a life-like owl to scare birds away from the trees over our patio.
go to the DOLLAR STORE and buy plastic wind socks and hang them where the birds hang out. I works great.
