Look on Kreg.com or kregtools.com they make excellent jigs to make your hole patterns. Remember to use tape on your drill or a drill stop so as not to drill all the way through your outside panels. Ask the hardware store for drill stops. Use dowel rods cut to your choice of length, but be sure that your dowel rod dia. completely fills the hole drilled snuggly, as this will aid the strength of your dowel pieces to support your shelves. Seldom does the back wall need be boarded but if you desire the back of the project back be covered, use a sheet of 1/16th” or 1/8th” sheathing. It’s only use is the beautify your project if you build the Kia way. Sometimes the sheathing comes with a print on it, like paneling of the 60’s. Most the time nowadays your biggest option is a plain A grade side and a plain b side. Remember to face the A side against the frame and main stay shelves that support your unit. If you work with partical board as your work materials, always use a very small drill, (like a #40) to pilot all your holes. You want especially to do this if drilling on the sides or ends of the material. Personally I would opt for plywood rather than partical board, as partical board tends to swell or delaminate when wet, and is hard to work with. Real lumber is best but cost more, because it’s stronger, lasts longer, and resist moisture better. If you wish to fancy the unit you can use molding or cornice pieces to decorate as “trim.” To make the angles fit properly at your corners please use a miter saw or miter saw jig. Seeing how the trim is part of the show finish use a brad nailer or finish nails then fill the reset fastener with wood putty, dry, & sand before stain.
