Replant.
You'll probably have to re-seed. Best done in the spring, unless you live way farther south than VA. Quick tip; place bag of seed in fridge overnight; will start growing quicker after planting. Cover area with some dirt/straw to keep birds from eating it all. Keep well watered until they sprout.
Re seed it
Re seed in fall ideally, but spring works as well. I am in Eastern Pennsylvania, and around here fall is the very best time to seed cool season grass so it can get established easier in the cool weather. It may be getting a little late in the season but you could give it a try and see if the seeds get established before winter sets in.
if your summer gets hot, spring reseeding is a loser,,,best, most efficient way is dormant seed in the winter after the ground freezes..seed needs to make ground contact. winter won’t hurt it, DO NOT USE ANY WEED CONTROL the next spring until you have mowed it 2x..you can LIGHTLY mulch to help keep the birds from feasting on the seed in the winter if theres no snow..also use a lite dressing of starter fertilizer when you dormant seed..don’t over apply seed either, you can actually put down too much seed.
