How do i paint stencils on vinyl floor?

I have seen beautiful stencil designs painted on tile floors. I don't have tile but have vinyl, what we used to call linoleum. Can the same thing be done on a vinyl floor?

Everything that Alice said AND remember, you will get a lot of wear on the floor that will wear off the paint, so you need to put a few coats of polyurethane or something similar on top of your stencilling.
