How do I paint a brown vinyl headboard?

I'm using a nautical theme and brown just doesn't work with the decor. Any suggestions are welcome. I'm not a novice, but not a pro either. How to prep, what type paint to use, and color suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

What might work best is to cover it with fabric! Could be easier too. Just get a piece big enough, then stretch it over to the back. Hold in place with staples. Done! :)

If your adamant about changing the color of the vinyl, look into automotive leather and vinyl paints and dyes. Also Rustoleum Specialty Vinyl spraypaint has some great reviews.
You would have more option covering with fabric. You could change it out much easier also.
Thank you, Mogie. I am considering that as an option. Just wondering if I want to keep the tufting and if that would be more trouble that it's worth. :)
I would use a chalk paint. My favorite is Fusion Mineral Paint, they have a product called ultra grip that will help adhere the paint to vinyl.
People have had a lot of luck with chalk paint on upholstery.
I think if it were mine, I would probably make a loose fitted cover and tie it underneath. That way you can go as wild as you like in style, or you could use
2 x Pillows and add straps or ties or elastic to hold them into place. The above ideas Cover over your headboard , so you don't have to spoil it, incase you need that style again in the future.
