I had a huge grapevine years ago and never trimmed it but for dead wood. Made a three sided enclosure for a bench and had it climb all over it, the massive amount of concord grapes hung inside the wires it climbed and was really easy to pick. Canned it for grape juice every year.

I have 3 varieties and I trim them all summer long to keep them neat. We don’t use the grapes.....just use them to cover up the fence From neighbors who only mow their lawn twice every summer!
