Most tree stands are adjustable and but if you can't get it to tighten enough to hold it, wrap it with a material the take up the gap.
If the trunk is too thick, you can try and whittle it down some or buy a new stand.
Use blocks of wood between the tree trunk and the inner portion where you usually screw the tree stand into the tree trunk. If it is too large trim tree trunk or buy a larger stand. They are very inexpensive.
I understand what your asking, the tree top is smaller than the bottom of the tree, I would say this.. try wrapping the bottom of the tree top with some thin cardboard and jamming it into the base. Surely this should work. Good luck,
