Hi Stamatis, I would wipe it down really well with denatured alcohol first. A fast stripper after that. Here is the kind I use so you can check it out.

I like Citristrip. It's not nearly as harsh as many chemical strippers.
Stamatis,. Buy some varnish remover, and follow the directions on the can
You can sand it down with a palm sander or use a Stripper or use steel wool pad to remove the old varnish. Brush or vacuum dust before proceeding to next step.
