Sep 1, 2016 - The ammonia is great for cutting grease and removing soap scum buildup. Soak a non-abrasive sponge in the baking soda/ammonia solution. Dip the sponge in the solution, scrub and repeat until you're satisfied. Rinse well. After rinsing, wipe thoroughly with a clean rag or the baking soda will leave a white film behind.Love cast iron tubs! Well first stop scrubbing. Most people equate scrubbing incessantly with "clean and sanitized." Which couldn't be farther from the truth. All that is happening is scrubbing the factory finish off the tub. I guarantee, without a doubt, that is what is going on at your house. The original finish is constantly being scrubbed off and the iron is casting a shadow beneath the remaining enamel. Vinegar and baking soda is all you need. I am not fond of bleach, unless absolutely necessary as most times it does more harm than good. If the tub still appears "dirty" you successfully scrubbed the finish off and can have professionally reglazed. I have had a number of tubs and sinks reglazed with outstanding results. The tub at my mom's house was reglazed in 2007 and still looks brand spanking new today. No Ajax, comet, etc. You can use Bar Keepers Friend.
