I have a hole in my wall over a fireplace in my living room. It is larger than my largest frame print. I don't want a tv in it. What do I do????
How big is the hole? If it's less than an inch, you could use spackle. If it's larger, you'll have to cut a piece of drywall and then patch around the edges. Make sure you get drywall that is the same thickness as the existing kind. Good luck!
If the hole is larger you can buy a repair kit at your local hardware store. Cut around the hole so make it more shaped. The kit should have a patch grid (kind of like screening) that you put over the hole. Follow directions - sanding, filling, sanding, filling, etc.

Faith's advice left out one option. If the hole is a couple of inches, you can purchase a mesh patch then use drywall compound over that.
Also, if you are patching with a cut piece of drywall you will need to tape the new piece to the original drywall before you apply compound.
When smoothing compound, use a damp sponge instead of sanding. It produces great results without making a huge sanding mess with the dust.
Hi Suz, this post might help you out. https://www.hometalk.com/diy/repair/drywall/how-to-patch-wall-hole-4413767
Patching a Hole in the Wall
Compound on a putty knife keep applying like 3 times letting it dry a day between when completely dry with powder to the touch sand smooth then paint
Hi Suz,
Faith has good advice but I wanted to ad that for 1” to 4” holes, the hole patch kits work and you won’t have to buy a large piece of drywall for a tiny hole if you dont have drywall pieces stored for projects.
The kits have a mesh screen with adhesive to stick to your wall and compound to fill it in. Measure your hole so you buy the right sized kit.
For larger holes, you will need drywall and probably will need to add wood to screw the drywall to. I like to use 1 x 2 lumber cut larger than the span of the hole. Slide it in (one near the top and another near the bottom) and screw in place through the existing wallboard. It’s tricky but not impossible. The screws in the wall mark where the wood is as well as holding it in place. Then place your drywall patch in the hole and screw to the boards. Now mud and tape the joints and mud the screws and your on your way!
