Be sure to test whatever you pick up first to make sure it'll take stain. I've yet to find one that does as it says it will.
Minwax will stain and so will Elmers, but the stain never matches. It would be easier, to fix with Elmers, my choice and paint
I think what I would do on that dresser, is get a piece of paneling or thin wood, Cut it to fit in the space, glue to the side right over the cracked part and stain.
