Lightly sand to remove any gloss. Prime with Kilz primer then paint your color. Seat with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane.
Erez: This paint requires NO surface preparation! ...and a little goes a long way.

You could use milk paint - you would only have to minimally sand the table first. I painted my oak cabinets with General Finishes’ milk paint. I also used their stain-blocking primer and performance top coat. My links to the products, photos of my project, a description of the brushes, etc., I used, and a tutorial can be found here: http://momhomeguide.com/my-painted-kitchen-cabinets-a-year-later/ I painted my cabinets over a year ago. It was easy and looks great! Good luck! 😃 🍀🎨
