How do I know when to trim a Hydranga tree?
I planted a hydranga tree two years ago. It is doing well but is becoming too large and oddly shaped. The weight of the flowers on the bottom branches make them droop, while the top branches stand upright, leaving a very odd looking middle. Can I prune off the bottom branches to make it more “treelike “. If so should I do it now or in the spring? I am in zone 7b.

Wait till the flowers dry, then cut back the stems to where there is a budding leaf on each side. You might need to support the bush if it has become too leggy
Often pruned as tree forms, these shrubs (Tardivas, PeeGees) explode with panicle-shaped white flowers in mid- to late summer. Because they bloom on new wood, prune these in early spring before they sprout new foliage.

Trim back as much as you want but must do before the first frost in the fall
if it’s too late this year, as the blooms come in the spring, cut the blooms away. They look lively in a vase😄
