Yes, the darker is first. Instead of sanding try using a wet wash rag and lightly rub the area you want distressed. Let the darker color dry over night. Let the cream dry about an hour before using the wet cloth.

Yes, do the darker first and then the lighter and you can sand away some of the lighter shade so that the darker shows through!
