Can I leave bulbs in the ground?

I usually dig up my cannas and dalias. Was told I could cover with leaves or mulch and not dig them up. Can I do this? thanks

It depends on what bulbs to which you refer and where you live. Look up each bulb you have and what is recommended for each bulb in your growing zone.
Carol, it all depends on your planting region. Ask the sales people at your local garden store or nursery if they recommend pulling them up. If you do, cut all of the growth off of the bulb, wipe them down and put them in a brown lunchbag. Keep the bags in a cool, dark place over the winter. A pantry or basement are perfect.
If you live where the ground freezes bulbs like Cannas HAVE to be lifted.

Hi Carol. It depends on your zone. I live in WI where the ground freezes rock hard. I do have to dig them up or I loose them. A few years ago I planted them back in the ground and spring, and sure enough we got frost, and they died. If you have a few days that would normally go below 20 F I would dig them up.
