Mix 1/3 cup of Plaster of Paris and 1/3 cup of cool water; stir until completely smooth. Mix that with 1 cup of latex paint and stir thoroughly. This will make enough chalk-finish paint for one coat on a six-drawer dresser. Chalk-finish paint should not be stored and reused.

If the piece you're painting is something you want to display in your home for years, I'd spring for the Annie Sloan chalk paint. I just refinished an old buffet, with 3 coats on the top, and 2 on the rest of it (sides, doors, drawers), and I only used about 1/4 of a quart of Annie Sloan. I've probably got enough left for a couple more pieces of furniture, plus I plan to do some fabric painting.
