Simply add one cup of hydrogen peroxide to the washer drum before adding water or clothes. The hydrogen peroxide can also be placed in the automatic bleach dispenser of the washer where it will be dispersed into the wash cycle.
I just use bleach
Bleach tends to make whites dingy over time and breaks down the fibers. I use 1/4 bottle of hydrogen peroxide along with detergent when I wash my whites. Safe for fabrics and a mild bleaching agent. Most oxygen detergents are peroxide based.
You can get the same effect on whites by using Oxyclean, it contains peroxide but in a powder form. Just follow the directions on the container.
Purchase "Mrs. Stewart's Bluing" in the laundry aisle of grocer or Walmart, etc., and follow the directions, strictly.
