Hi Kelly, You will have to cover it with a primer first. When I have a really dark color I also buy the paint that has primer in it too but you can just primer it and paint.
Hi Kelly, when painting over dark walls with lighter colors, it's always best to use a white primer first. Once the primer is dry apply your cream colour. You may need to do a second coat on those areas where some of the dark blue still shows through.
The two most important factors to remember when covering a dark wall with a lighter color are patience and product.
The more extreme the transformation the more likely your project will require multiple coats.
You might want to consider using a gray colored primer. Using it will help to ensure that your color comes out true when dry, with no dark base color muting a light one or a light base color making it impossible to get bold color coverage. Using it also lessens the need for additional coats of paint to get complete coverage.
Just realize this will take several coats of paint.
I agree with using a light grey tinted primer for the first two coats, and then moving onto the cream color. Like mentioned before, it requires a lot of patience and multiple coats to cover a dark color with a light color completely. I would say at least 5 coats.
I usually start with a cheaper primer. Paint on a few coats, then paint on the white. I like latex in eggshell finish for painting white furniture. The coverage is lovely and it still has a matte finish like you get with chalk paint. But no top coat necessary!
Use a grey primer! Works best!
Start with a primer! This is the primer that I use for just about anything and everything: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-Interior-Exterior-Multi-purpose-Water-based-Wall-and-Ceiling-Primer-Actual-Net-Contents-128-fl-oz/3439970
