That depends on what pattern is in your design. The easiest would be to paint stripes in different colors. Next easiest would be stenciling a design on your wall in different colors. There are lots of ways but these are the two that immediately come to mind.
You can also do a sponge paint technique.

Hello and Happy Holidays. I would put darker shade on bottom and middle shade on top. Split the two colors with a chair rail. Paint the chair rail with lightest color of all.
A stencil would work to put a design on the wall. Royal Design Studios has amazing wall stencils.
Use a foam roller and remove almost all of the paint. Go lightly to avoid pushing the paint under the stencil. When you're working, you see every flaw up close, but when you stand back, the design will look good.
