Hi Eleanor. I'm Cindy. That is going to be a tedious job Eleanor. But I'm sure worth it. Use painters tape around all the white squares going down and across. Paint all the white squares. Wait until dry to remove the tape. Give it another 24 hours to be sure the white paint is completely dry. Then tape off all the black squares. Paint them black. Remove the tape. Wait another day for paint to cure. And, last but not least, seal the board. Good luck Eleanor and Happy Holidays.
Just get some black and white paint and go for it. Is it made out of wood or heavy cardboard? Do you know if it's painted with oil or acrylic? Put a cotton ball in alcohol and rub on paint (black). If color comes off its acrylic, if not it's oil. Make sure it is clean first to not confuse with dirt. Get the type of paint it's already painted with. Have fun. You don't need to seal oil based paint.
These are how to paint checkerboards but the process can be used to repaint.

You will need to tape off the area you do not want to paint. I always use Frog tape because it keeps a crisp line. Tape around the original black and white. This should be an easy project!
