I was watching a lady who made her on ship lap very cheap and I lost the site before I could save
You can buy sheets of underlayment at the hardware store. Have them cut them into 6" or 8" strips. Lightly sand the edges and nail them to the wall into the studs. Underlayment sheets are about $15 each where I live, so they're extremely affordable.
You can check out Craigslist's free section. They often have free pallets. It takes some work to break them down, sand them and seal them but they look really nice. Be sure you nail into the studs.
