How do I paint over oil based paint and keep it from peeling?

My "professional" painter painted my kitchen cabinets (that were painted with oil based paint) with acrylic paint. It is chipping off quite a bit. What can I do to keep them from chipping after I retouch them? Or do I have to sand and start over? Thanks!

The acrylic is the problem not the oil based paint. The problem is that he could have used an oil based primer before applying the acrylic but few recommend using Oil based Paint as a Substitute for Oil based primer. I know it sounds wacky but: Your best bet is to do away with the acrylic with a power sander and eyewear to apply something like

Kilz Original Oil Base Interior Primer

    With

    Kilz Premium Interior/exterior

For more information on your options go here:

    With keywords of:

    what+paint+to+use+on+oil+based+primer

And if you scroll down some you get to the question: Can I use acrylic paint over oil based Primer.

You will note even there it says:

Some manufacturers of latex products will

recommend an oil base primer when going over

    oil-based paint.

This is so 90% of the time and Especially when: you do not know the brand name of the paint that was used prior.

He should have used Kills in between. I would sand, use kills and then paint them.

If it was done not that long ago, I would contact the person who painted your cupboards and let him know what is happening with the paint chipping. If he is a pro he should have used the right material to use to make a long lasting paint job. If he did it wrong, he should fix it. The pros get clients from happy customers and reviews, not from boo-boos he does on jobs. This is his bread and butter, he may want to fix it so that it is right and you are happy.

Definitely he should have primed with Kilz primer first. Scrape off any paint that will come off. Lightly sand to smooth out then paint.
