Hello, Thats a tricky one, physical fencing can be expensive. We used invisible fencing with our two Weimaraners spanning the past 23 years. Im not sure how that would work with a sighthound or to protect intruders coming onto your property. I hope someone comes up with a suitable solution.

The cheapest is to install chain link - you have a LOT of ground to cover, so this is the most inexpensive and easiest to install. The other option is to install an invisible fence, where you place the wire into the ground a few inches where the boundaries are. Your greyhound will wear a collar that will shock it when it crosses the line (it isn't harmful or painful) until it learns its boundaries. Good luck!

Given that you have a greyhound, I don't see the use of evergreens to contain the dog. You may have to opt for a 6-8' fence, if code permits, for at least .3 acres of your property. Then you could have Green Giants installed along the remaining property, for privacy. Installation should be staggered, rather than in a straight line, for more privacy.

You could supplant the areas with Pyracantha, Honey Locust trees, or any other plants such as Barbery Hedge to make the area less inviting to intruders.

  • Love greyhounds! My girlfriend has a rescued one and she visits often. You have a decent sized property. To keep costs down, you might considering fencing off only a portion. Types of fences vary greatly across the country. Explore each and every single one. Post hole digging isn't fun, I suggest getting help with that. Maybe you can barter with a professional? At my former home we had 7 acres and only fenced off what would be an averaged sized yard. Designed and marked off where each post hole was to be placed. We paid for a service to dig the post holes. Then we welded our own fence from wrought iron with a gate. You can also purchase pre made sections, but check the prices - quality does matter. This was back in the summer of '94 and it did cost a chunk of change but far less than paying for someone to do for us.
