You'll need to make a cut in the carpet, near a corner, then another cut, no more than 3' from the first. Rip the carpet toward you, wearing gloves with a good grip factor. Don't rip more than 3-4' in length, to make pieces more manageable. You may need a wide, flat faced trowel or pry bar, for assistance. When done with carpet, start on padding, knowing you'll probably need to scrape any residue from the floor.

Carpet will have tacks and tack strip, so use a flat headed screw driver, a smaller claw hammer, and good needle nosed pliers to remove these tacks/tack strips.

If you're fortunate enough to have hardwood floors beneath, sand, vacuum with a wet dry vac, tack cloth, stain the wood with 2 coats stain, then poly seal.

If you have plywood below, you'll need to purchase hardwood. It will need to acclimate to your home's humidity level, which can take several days to 10 days.

If you're fortunate, it will have tongue and groove installation, but otherwise, you'll need to lay out pieces and install each one, using the specified adhesive, or nailing in place.

If your room is large, you'll need good knee pads, a great deal of patience, eye and ear protection, a good mask, and coveralls.
