My question as I watched these grandparents was always, "Why are you sweeping your yards, and why is there no grass around your house?" We have grass around ours.
I use the spray bottle of Prestone windshield deicer. Spray it on, let it sit for a minute and it helps get it off. How hard it is to get off depends on how thick it is. Make sure you have your defogger on while you are warming up the car, that will help immensely.

Applying 3 coats of Rain X to a very clean and dry winshield will markedly reduce ice buildup. The Prestone recommended above is also very good.
You can purchase windshield covers (at auto supply stores, walmart, etc.) which are kept in place with your wipers and car doors. They'll save an inordinate amount of time and effort on snowy and icy mornings.
