Hi Cindi. I'm Cindy. If you want to update your kitchen island, you could paint/stain it. You will need to sand it first. Or, if you don't feel like sanding, you can use a new product in the home improvement stores, called "Beyond Paint". It's expensive, but an island would not require a lot of paint. With this new product, you don't have to sand or seal. Other ways to update your island are: adding a spindle for paper towels, installing shelves on both sides to hold cookbooks, cutting boards, etc., putting a pot rack above the island to hold all of your pots and pans, and, last but not least, putting a couple drawers in under the top surface to hold pot holders, towels, dishcloths, aprons and tablecloths. Cindi, I hope you find these ideas helpful. Good luck and Happy Holidays.
Do you want a new surface or to paint the existing wood siding? A new paint job will give the kitchen island a face lift. New hardware (if there is any) is like adding jewelry to an outfit.
