Pat hello. To make it easy and slip free, you can buy stair treds. They nail on or use heavy duty staples.
There are rug type for non slip. But Keep in mind you will have to sweep or vacuum these off.
You can also get plastic ridged ones which you can just easily sweep off.

There are all sorts of premade finishes you can buy to finish these stairs which requires little work. Keep in mind that varnished steps are not recommended for people your age, and you certainly do not want to get something that requires a lot of cleaning.
I painted the sides of the steps going up from our den to our kitchen white...mistake!!! They get scuffed and look dirty all the time. I love the dark runner hubs stapled to the steps...coffee spills can't be seen.

Here is a link for runners you can buy to the desired length. You may want to have a carpet shop put this in for you to make sure you get the right length.
