As a general rule it is better for most plants when they are in the dormant stage, meaning late fall, winter, or early spring. The reason for this is make sure the roots are well established and no buds are growing. If you cut off in late spring or early summer, you stand a chance of not having flowers or fruit.
What plants and what zone are you in Sandy? Some plants may perish if you prune now and they don't have time to harden off before snow flies. If in a milder climate you might be able to do so. If in doubt, might be best to wait until late winter to early spring before plants wake up for the season. Find out your zone here:

Hi Sandy.
I only prune in the late Spring when the frosts are over and the sap is rising. It then is safer and the wounds repair faster.
