I had my back yard graveled (beautiful) because it is mostly shade and no grass would grow. Using containers, what big plants and flowers will work in yard and on my deck ?

I also have huge trees in my yard. I have two huge half wine barrels that I put the really big elephant ear bulbs in and they do really well in mostly shade. If it gets cold for the winter, just dig up the bulbs before it freezes and keep them in the house until the soil warms up. I plant Coleus around the outside edge of the pot for contrast to the green and to fill in the lower part of the pot. Hostas do well in pots or the ground, again, in pots they won't survive a freeze, but in ground will be no problem, they would probably do fine if you put the pots in the garage so they are more sheltered for the winter. There are many plants and shrubs that do fine in shady situations, you can check with a local greenhouse, not big box store for what will work the best for your area and shady situation. I hope this helps you Joyce!
