Hi Colleen, you'll need to start at a corner and it very well may be attached with both staples and glue. Or cut a chunk out of one of the steps and just start pulling. A claw foot hammer with the nail puller on the opposite side will help you get the staples out. Time-consuming, tiring job but you can do it.

When you start in corner to loosen cut in 3 foot lengths with a utility knife and roll up, being careful to LIFT off of the floor as you cut or shove a board under the piece you are cutting so you do not damage flooring underneath. It is easier to cut from the bottom of the carpet as you lift. It is too hard to cut thru the top where the pile is.

When you get to the opposite wall tie a rope around the roll and take to curb. The majority of trash pick up places will not take larger than 3 foot and must be tied.
