I recently painted my pressed wood cabinets. I cleaned them, primed, then 2 coats of paint. They look fabulous. It has brightened up my kitchen immenselly.
immensely.

You can paint. Clean with TSP, sand off sheen. Prime with oil based primer, lightly sand and paint with oil based paint.
