What kind of dishes? Good china! Crystal! Good silver? Stainless? Sterling, silverplate, and crystal of any kind should never go in the dishwasher. If you china has silver or gold plating on it, never in the dishwasher. Good hot soap and water with a sponge or dishrag never hurt any dishes that I have ever had. I use a sponge and dish soap.
Dishwasher, or hand wash with dawn type dish detergent.
If there are light gray scratches from stainless steel cutlery I use Barkeepers friend to remove.
