Take everything out as the first step. Paint the entire space a nice soothing color as a creamy white or very light grey. The ceiling could be ceiling white. On the wall opposite the door hang a large mirror. If you have built-in shelves you can purchase, or use what you have, storage containers. Use a variety of containers including baskets. The seasonal items can be stored in an upper area. Be sure to label these containers with the contents. It's so easy to forget what's where! Hang clothes by type, then by color. Blouses, t's, long-sleeved-short sleeved, etc. It looks so nice to have hangers that match and not a mixture of wire, wood and plastic. Maybe replace a few at a time. His/Hers on separate sides. Shoes can be hung on the back of the door in shoe bags or neatly placed in pairs on narrow shelves. Slanted shelves work well, too. One important thing to remember... if it hasn't been worn in a year it doesn't need to be in your closet! Donate it! You'll be surprised at just how much you can get rid of and how paint can transform an area. And don't forget a new light fixture!
