I would try to add some wood glue into the gap!
Since that is a safety hazard, I think a handyman would be able to help you with that. Calling a woodworker or someone that does finish work could be expensive.
Might require the knowledge of a GOOD professional handyman to make it SAFE and restored properly if you have not the proper skills. Don't take any chances- or do a GOOGLE search and look at very video on YouTube-- to see how, what, etc. to do!!!! Then call a repairman!-
