Because it is asbestos you will need a professional to do the work or you can put another layer of 1/2 inch drywall over the whole thing which will give you a much nicer finish.

If it has asbestos, you need to hire someone to remove. It's not worth the risk of exposure because this will most likely cause serious health issues down the road.

In many areas it is illegal to remove asbestos yourself. Must be performed by professionals. Some neighbors contaminated an entire neighborhood. Neighbors turned them in, they got tossed in jail, bank took back their home, now homeless and bankrupt with children . . .
