Not having a good idea of what the rest of your kitchen is like, the tiles look good to me. They are clean and not cracked and are a neutral color. They may be outdated but will painting them make you happy? If so, there are plenty of videos and info- just Google “painting tiles”. Just understand that the process is long and the paint is very smelly.
If you could post pics of the rest of your kitchen, it may be helpful?
good luck!
Rust-Oleum sells a glazing kit meant for tile, i would recommend that.
Stenciling a small design on select tiles may save you hours of work, but be sure they are well sealed for kitchen use.
Hi there,

Hi Anita,
It's true, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
I am having trouble telling if these are ceramic tiles or the linoleum product that was popular way back when?
A suggestion would be to use peel and stick tiles available at DIY stores and also Amazon.
These come in plastic and Styrofoam. If you opt for the Styrofoam be aware they can be painted and cut to match your decor.
Or you might like the tin tiles that are not too costly. Z-brick is another application you could do.
If I had those hideous tiles in my kitchen, I would never get any sleep at night. I once covered some ugly Brown tiles on a bathroom wall with bronze and gold spray paint alternating. Mask off the rest of your kitchen with lots of cardboard that you can get free from boxes, open all the windows and doors and spray very lightly until it looks right. If you don't have a steady hand, hang out of the coffee shop until you make friends with an artist, bring them home, make them lunch, reward them with wine and coffee, work on this project together and your backsplash will be beautiful
